Somerset Park was used by Ayr FC (later Ayr United FC) from 1888. The football pitch was realigned in 1897 and a tarmac cycle track was laid. The work was carried out by Walkers, a local Ayr company who had laid a similar track at Celtic Park. Ayr Post Office Directory of 1900 describes the track as "one of the finest in Scotland".
There are results from bicycle races at Somerset Park from the 1890's until the 1920's. In 1924 the ground was upgraded and the pitch realigned again, resulting in the loss of the cycle track.
